Quite simply the best type of filter is the diatomaceous earth filter, often referred to as the DE filter. Diatomaceous earth is a naturally occurring sedimentary rock, which looks and feels a bit like chalk. It is abrasive and can be crumbled into powder. The water of your pool passes through the diatomaceous earth and it filters out even the smallest of particles, which would otherwise go into your pool.

Sand filters allow for a much greater volume of water to pass through them. The filtration material is, of course, sand and so they are not capable of removing the smaller particles. They are effective in stopping particles of approximately 20 to 100 microns in size so the smaller particles will still get through. They are, however, cheaper than the DE filters if you are on a tight budget.

Thirdly, there are the cartridge filters. The low maintenance option but also the least effective. They will remove particles of approximately 25 to 100 microns in size.

Do remember that an effective filter is only half the battle to maintain a clean and healthy pool. The right balance of pool chemicals will also ensure that your pool is properly sanitized and is an essential part of pool maintenance.

When choosing your filter, budget will of course be a major factor. Otherwise, you will need to know whether your local water supply is such that it requires a DE filter or whether a sand or cartridge filter will suffice. Also, consider the size of your pool. A larger pool may require a sand filter to cope with the greater volume of water.

Finally, a word about cleaning your pool filter. This is vital to ensure that it continues to operate efficiently. It is also quite simple. Just reverse the flow of water and the debris will be flushed away!
